Written Exams

Applicants filling out forms at the academy.

Overview

The California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) mandates that peace officers be able to read and write at the levels necessary to perform the job of a peace officer.  This is determined by use of a written examination.  The written examination for the Deputy Sheriff position and the Sheriff's Correctional Deputy position are different and cannot be used to satisfy the other positions written examination requirement.  Only the entry-level cadet positions of Deputy Sheriff Cadet and Sheriff's Correctional Deputy Cadet require a written examination.  Lateral positions for either do not require a written examination.

Deputy Sheriff

We now accept the P.O.S.T. Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLET-B) to satisfy our requirement for a written examination.  Applicants who have completed the PELLET-B within a year of the date we administer the examination can use their T-Scores from the test they already completed.  Check the current job posting at www.SCCJobs.org for our examination dates.  Applicants must provide proof of the written examination results with a passing T-Score of 48 or higher with the initial application.  The T-Scores results must be on an agency letterhead where the examination was administered and list the type of examination, examination date, and the examination results.

For applicants who have not taken the PELLET-B or do not have a passing T-Score, we administer the PELLET-B on approximately a monthly basis to the applicants who have applied for the Deputy Sheriff Cadet position.  You will be contacted with the date and time of the examination after your application is screened for the minimum requirements.

There are many resources to help you prepare for the PELLET-B.  The P.O.S.T. website provides a Preparation Guide for the PELLET-B which can be found here and at the link at the bottom of the page.

Sheriff's Correctional Deputy

We administer the S.T.C. Adult Corrections Officer(STCACO) Examination on approximately a monthly basis to the applicants who have applied for the Sheriff's Correctional Deputy Cadet position.  You will be contacted with the date and time of the examination after your application is screened for the minimum requirements.

There are many resources to help you prepare for the STCACO Examination.  The BSCC S.T.C. website provides an Orientation Booklet for the STCACO Examination which can be found here and at the link at the bottom of the page.
