    Volunteer Opportunities

    The County of Santa Clara is committed to connecting volunteers with community needs and promoting volunteerism within the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County.  The Santa Clara County Sheriff Search and Rescue (SCCSSAR) Team is looking for qualified members to join our team.     Extra Help

    The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office regularly hires retired law enforcement officers as extra help deputies. Under supervision, the extra help deputy is required to perform active law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property, the investigation of crimes, and the apprehension of law violators; to provide security to the Superior Court and the service of civil process issued by the Court; and to perform a variety of technical law enforcement tasks. The extra help deputy is limited to no more than 960 hours per year and must have a current POST certificate. If there has been a break in service for longer than three years, the extra help deputy may be required to complete a 144 hour re-certification course and may be subjected to a full background investigation.

    Sheriff's Correctional Deputy - EH

    Under supervision, to maintain order and security of inmates within the Sheriff’s Office Correctional facility, and to transport inmates from the Sheriff’s Office Correctional facilities to and from court, medical facilities, and other locations within and outside the County; to supervise a crew of inmates in work projects throughout the County, and to assist in the correction of anti-social attitudes and behaviors.
     
    Under the appointing authority of the Sheriff, the Sheriff's Correctional Deputy has peace officer status while assigned to a detention facility, which extends throughout California when engaged in duties described in Penal Code Section 830.1(c).

    Student Internship Program

    The Student Internship Program is designed to nurture the educational and professional development of promising job candidates. Student Interns assist professional and technical employees in the performance of their duties under close supervision. The student intern’s specific tasks vary depending on the divisions to which they are assigned. Student Interns can be used throughout the calendar year depending on the needs of the department.

    Reserves

    The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office has one of the largest Reserve Units in the County.  The Reserve Unit has a combination of Level I, Level II, and Level III Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s working pursuant to Penal Code section 832.6.  Sheriff’s Office Reserves are made up from members of the community who volunteer their time to supplement Sheriff’s Office services.  Sheriff’s Office Reserves are required to complete training pursuant to POST regulations.  Most of our current Sheriff’s Office Reserves are retired peace officers, successful business owners, and medical doctors.  Sheriff’s Office Reserves can work independently or alongside full-time Sheriff’s deputies to provide law enforcement services for the county.  Sheriff’s Office Reserves can perform several specialized law enforcement assignments such as uniformed patrol, investigations, search and rescue, Sheriff's Emergency Response Team (SERT), Crowd Control Unit, Hostage Negotiation Team, just to name a few.
