Crisis Intervention Team Training

The mission of the County of Santa Clara is to plan for the needs of a dynamic community; provide quality services; and promote a healthy, safe, and prosperous community for all. In keeping with this mission, The County of Santa Clara, Office of the Sheriff, together with several community partners, provide multiple Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trainings throughout the year. This State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified class is attended by Academy Recruits, as well as officers in the field. The training is also open to all outside law enforcement agencies.

The main purpose of the training is to build stronger partnership supporting law enforcement with effective intervention techniques, and resources, while maintaining public safety, when interacting with individuals going through serious mental health/substance use challenges.

Annually, our county partner, Behavioral Health Services, in collaboration with Office of the Sheriff and the Board of Supervisors, recognizes individuals from our local law enforcement agencies, who have attended the CIT class and shown outstanding performance within their job in the area of supporting and/or de-escalating situations involving mental health/substance use.

Nominations are submitted to the Behavioral Health Services and officers are later recognized and awarded for their work by the Board of Supervisors. The award winners for 2020 CIT Officer of the Year are listed below:
