Custody Health tested an inmate in Unit M8B at the Elmwood Correctional Facility because he was scheduled for a dental appointment. The result was positive, so staff tested the entire dorm; the testing produced fifteen more positive results. Initially, all were asymptomatic, but later, two inmates exhibited symptoms of COVID-19. Staff could not determine the origin or degree of the outbreak at the time, so all visiting to the unit was suspended.
Unit M8B was deemed “exposed” and thus staff implemented exposure protocols requiring Day 1, Day 5, and Day 12 testing. Due to the high risk of exposure in this unit, no more than four inmates are allowed out of their cells at the same time. Custody staff posted informational flyers throughout the unit to educate inmates about COVID-19, and inmates are reminded to maintain social distancing and use face coverings or risk out-of-cell restrictions. Custody Health has designed a plan to regularly test all staff (sworn and professional).
